Do businesses appreciate seniors?

Posted on July 29th, 2009 by Sandy Reed

As we baby boomers age, it seems that the business world appreciates our wisdom and contribution less and less…  However, that is not always the case.

As reported in More Magazine, in Argentina us middle agers are not just appreciated but sought out.  One company in particular placed a help-wanted ad looking specifically for “Mothers, Aunts, and Grandmothers”.  Guess they have decided their customers need more nurturing.

Let’s hear it for Argentina!

Perseverance in Business is the Name of the Game

Posted on July 27th, 2009 by Sandy Reed

All us business owners know that it can be tough out in the marketplace right now.  There are many businesses closing their doors, and moving on to what they hope will be “greener” pastures.  But for those of us who are hanging in there, we’re finding a new definition of courage, perseverance, and determination to succeed.   If you find it hard at times to keep on keeping on, remember this story.

On July 26, 1989 Mark Wellman, a 29-year old paraplegic, climbed Yosemite’s El Capitan - by ha800px-Yosemite_El_Capitanuling himself up 6 inches at a time.  He reportedly did 7,000 pull-ups on his ascent of El Capitan, a vertical rock formation, and one of the world’s favorite challenges for rock climbers.   However, most rock climbers do not have the added challenge of being a paraplegic…  Wellman took nine days to make the 3,000 foot climb.  The perseverance this feat required is beyond my imagination.  It makes the the small task of spending more time learning how to market and grow my businesses, in the face of a tough economy, seem like child’s play.

Wellman is currently a nationally acclaimed author, filmmaker and motivational speaker.  He has inspired millions to meet their problems head-on and become all that they can be.  He is a two-time Paralympian and former Yosemite Park Ranger.  His book Climbing Back is his autobiographical account of this historic climb.

The next time you are letting the outside world get the best of you, you might want to visit his website at www.nolimitstahoe.com and get ready to be inspired into action!

Marketing Out-of-the-Box

Posted on July 24th, 2009 by Sandy Reed

The headlines in the paper read, “Hotel industry reeling”.  I hesitated to read another negative article about the flailing economy.  But something caught my attention.  On the same page where it was reported that about 250 hotels are in default or disclosure, and as many as 500 properties could be in default by the end of 2009, I was fascinated to see this headline, “Hilton blossoms anew”.  In the face of the hotel industry “reeling”, this particular Hilton has chosen to revamp itself and now offers 198 rooms with 32-inch, high-definition televisions and luxury furnishings – and it’s getting rave reviews from the local clientele.

Some may think the owners of this hotel have gone off the deep end.  I beg to differ…  Instead I believe they have looked this economy straight in the proverbial eye and said, ” I know what I need to do to survive, and I’m doing it!”

In the construction industry, there are many contractors who have given up and moved on to other careers.  In our small, home-based construction company, we have chosen to not only survive, but thrive, by stepping up our marketing, advertising, and getting our mindset straight.

There is a lesson to be learned from the economic state we are in right now, and those who choose to learn it will be set to become stronger and more profitable now and in the future.  The lesson is, don’t ever up.  Learn what you need to do to become better, stronger, and to set yourself apart from your competitors.  Think out-of-the-box, and in time you’ll reap the reward as only us “heretics” do.

“Never give up, for that is just the place and time the tide will turn.”

- Harriett Beecher Stowe, Author of  Uncle Tom’s Cabin

Why is physical fitness so important anyway??

Posted on July 22nd, 2009 by Sandy Reed
Does this sound familiar?

You get up at 6 am, drag yourself into the shower to jump start your body, gulp down a quick cup of coffee and granola bar and run out the door and drive like a speed demon to hopefully make an early morning meeting.

Finding time to exercise?  Yeah, right!

Do You Want to Live to Be 100?

Posted on July 8th, 2009 by Sandy Reed

It seems like famous people are dropping like flies these days – Michael Jackson, Farrah Fawcett, Ed McMahon, Billy Mays, Gail Storm (us middle-agers remember her!), Karl Malden… In my own life, I just found out that an old friend passed away last month. How seriously can you take all the perceived problems and stresses we allow ourselves to experience when we have such a short time to enjoy our lives?

As a woman building two businesses, I know how easy it is to get caught up in the constant barrage of “stuff” that needs to get done every day just to keep the income flowing. Still, what sense does any of this make without taking time to enjoy the normal everyday parts of living?

Happy Freedom Day!

Posted on July 3rd, 2009 by Sandy Reed

Here’s some interesting July 4th facts from our local 3-minute Stockton Record newspaper.AmerFlagHeart

Did you know?  If you ever want to discard a worn American flag, you should burn it or have an American Legion post or Boy Scout do it for you.

The only person to actually sign the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776 was John Hancock.  Most of the men signed it on August 2, 1776.  Benjamin Franklin was the oldest man who signed at age 70, and Edward Rutledge was the youngest at age 26.

Two of our presidents signed the Declaration of Independence – John Adams and Thomas Jefferson – the second and third presidents respectively.

Three presidents died July 4 – John Adams and Thomas Jefferson in 1826, and James Monroe in 1831.

In 1776 approximately 2.5 million people lived in the U.S.  Today, approximately 304 million live in this great nation.

I hope you enjoy every minute of your July 4th celebration!
