The High Price of Gas: Four Ways the “Idea” of Your Business Can Cost You Everything

Posted on March 22nd, 2010 by Sandy Reed

by
Kim Castle, Co-creator BrandU™

Last week I was exercising near my home in Southern California by climbing hundreds of stairs along the canyon wall. It’s a way for me to break away from my business, so that I’m free to expand for an hour or so.

Out of the blue an idea for a completely new product came into my mind and I couldn’t get it out.  It grew so strong that it drowned out the Black Eyed Peas blaring from my IPod.

It started out soft like a “tickle” and before I knew it, my thoughts weren’t my own anymore.

I started seeing the product and how it would be constructed; all the way down to what color the stitching was and where the logo would go.

I got excited knowing that there wasn’t a product like this on the market and began thinking about how it would radically change the way people did things.

Making Peace with Money – Using Continuity Programs

Posted on February 16th, 2010 by Sandy Reed

If you’re a marketing consultant you’re probably familiar with the continuity program model. A continuity program is defined as a program for your business that allows you to make money on a continuing basis versus selling a product or service only once. An example of a continuity program is monthly group coaching or a membership-based program, such as the one we offer here at the National Association of Marketing Consultants. There is no end to the creativity business owners have in formulating their own continuity programs.

A powerful example of this concept is a new online tool created to make it easier for credit card holders and borrowers to manage their money. Zendough.com was created by the credit reporting agency, Transunion to help people see the big picture of their finances. It offers three ways for you to monitor your money. My Credit keeps you updated on your credit score and lets you easily see any inaccuracies and make corrections. My Identify gives you an indication of your risk of identity fraud. My Accounts provides a detailed listing of your credit accounts and debts in graph format.

Transunion offers this service for $14.95 per month, or $179.40 a year, and offers a free seven-day trial. In these economic times when many people are in the process of rebuilding their credit, this continuity program is a stroke of genius. It is just one example of how you can turn your product and/or service into ongoing monthly income, and provide a much needed service to your choice clients at the same time.

Marketing Out-of-the-Box

Posted on July 24th, 2009 by Sandy Reed

The headlines in the paper read, “Hotel industry reeling”.  I hesitated to read another negative article about the flailing economy.  But something caught my attention.  On the same page where it was reported that about 250 hotels are in default or disclosure, and as many as 500 properties could be in default by the end of 2009, I was fascinated to see this headline, “Hilton blossoms anew”.  In the face of the hotel industry “reeling”, this particular Hilton has chosen to revamp itself and now offers 198 rooms with 32-inch, high-definition televisions and luxury furnishings – and it’s getting rave reviews from the local clientele.

Some may think the owners of this hotel have gone off the deep end.  I beg to differ…  Instead I believe they have looked this economy straight in the proverbial eye and said, ” I know what I need to do to survive, and I’m doing it!”

In the construction industry, there are many contractors who have given up and moved on to other careers.  In our small, home-based construction company, we have chosen to not only survive, but thrive, by stepping up our marketing, advertising, and getting our mindset straight.

There is a lesson to be learned from the economic state we are in right now, and those who choose to learn it will be set to become stronger and more profitable now and in the future.  The lesson is, don’t ever up.  Learn what you need to do to become better, stronger, and to set yourself apart from your competitors.  Think out-of-the-box, and in time you’ll reap the reward as only us “heretics” do.

“Never give up, for that is just the place and time the tide will turn.”

Do you have shelves of books, maybe even from college days, covered in dust from lack of active use? Are there drawers of papers filed away but never accessed? Or worse yet, piles of paper and “stuff”?

Do you keep things because you “might need this someday” or because you fear not knowing enough or being good enough in your own right? Truth is that your brain is so powerful and amazing that it’s pretty hard to even comprehend.

You have already learned, internalized and benefited already from the books, magazines and papers you are hoarding and have the ability to use it at will. We keep “stuff” mainly out of fear of scarcity. In this information age, to fear lack of information is really pretty ridiculous, isn’t it?

Give Up the Stress Gremlins…

Posted on August 27th, 2008 by Sandra Reed
Well, here I am in my new home. I have once again survived a move – almost… We are over ¾ of the way moved in our house. We still have “stuff” at our previous house, but nothing that takes a mountain of effort to figure out how to fit in our smaller space.

During the times I was so exhausted I didn’t see how I could keep going, I was given the gift of insight. These insights relate not only to my recent move, but to life and business in general. I hope they help you in your next big move, whether it’s a move of your home, career, or just a move from one way of thinking to another.

Advertising Your Small Business – Persistence is the Secret!

Posted on July 16th, 2008 by Sandra Reed

For all you business owners wondering when enough advertising is too much, here’s a timeless reminder of just what it takes to get the attention of your target market.

The More Things Change, the More They Stay the Same

  1. The first time a man looks at an advertisement, he does not see it.
  2. The second time, he does not notice it.
  3. The third time, he is conscious of its existence.
  4. The fourth time, he faintly remembers having seen it before.
  5. The fifth time, he reads it.
  6. The sixth time, he turns up his nose at it.
  7. The seventh time, he reads it through and says, "Oh brother!"
  8. The eighth time, he says, "Here’s that confounded thing again!"
  9. The ninth time, he wonders if it amounts to anything.
  10. The tenth time, he asks his neighbor if he has tried it.
  11. The eleventh time, he wonders how the advertiser makes it pay.
  12. The twelfth time, he thinks it must be a good thing.
  13. The thirteenth time, he thinks perhaps it might be worth something.
  14. The fourteenth time, he remembers wanting such a thing a long time.
  15. The fifteenth time, he is tantalized because he cannot afford to buy it.
  16. The sixteenth time, he thinks he will buy it some day.
  17. The seventeenth time, he makes a memorandum to buy it.
  18. The eighteenth time, he swears at his poverty.
  19. The nineteenth time, he counts his money carefully.
  20. The twentieth time he sees the ad, he buys what it is offering.

Written in 1885 by Thomas Smith, London, England

The moral of this story is, if you’re going to advertise  be persistent!

Boost Your Business with Target Marketing

Posted on June 7th, 2008 by Sandra Reed

Often the most profound bits of wisdom are revealed in mundane situations.  This morning I finished up a bottle of body oil and noticed that it felt really good to know I had used it all up, wasting none of its contents.  This led me to think about my life.  When I get to the end of my life, I want to feel really good about having used it all up, and know that I wasted none of the gifts inside of me.  What a terrible waste it is when any of us leave this world without taking the time to discover our gifts and use them in a way that can benefit our world.

That’s what your business truly is.  It’s a love offering to the world.  It’s an expression of your soul in such a way that it brings value and happiness to your life and to all your clients, whose life it benefits.  It is your privilege, and responsibility, to find ways to let people know what you have to offer them.
