Here’s some interesting July 4th facts from our local 3-minute Stockton Record newspaper.
Did you know? If you ever want to discard a worn American flag, you should burn it or have an American Legion post or Boy Scout do it for you.
The only person to actually sign the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776 was John Hancock. Most of the men signed it on August 2, 1776. Benjamin Franklin was the oldest man who signed at age 70, and Edward Rutledge was the youngest at age 26.
Two of our presidents signed the Declaration of Independence – John Adams and Thomas Jefferson – the second and third presidents respectively.
Three presidents died July 4 – John Adams and Thomas Jefferson in 1826, and James Monroe in 1831.
In 1776 approximately 2.5 million people lived in the U.S. Today, approximately 304 million live in this great nation.
