With 250 million members on Facebook and growing daily, if you host your own events – whether in-person or virtual, such as webinars or teleclasses – you can increase your visibility and attendance rate significantly when you know how to effectively use Facebook’s Events feature.
And, as an attendee of any event on Facebook, you can easily help create buzz and visibility for both yourself and the event organizer. I recommend being strategic and mindful about the events you do RSVP for. (I’m sure, like me, you get your fair share of non-relevant Event invitations!)
As an organizer, do leave all the default settings the way they are when setting up your Event – that is, allow guests to invite others, upload photos, write on the wall, etc. The reason being is every one of these activities creates an activity that goes out into the News Feed of those individuals and of their friends. This is great viral visibility for you and for them.
Also, when setting up your own events, be sure to choose an attention-grabbing title and an appealing photo – these two aspects are the only ones seen in the Requests area when you invite your friends (and they in turn invite their friends). The small greeting you can include goes out in the email notification, so that’s important too.
Here are my top ten tips for creating viral visibility – as a Facebook Event attendee and/or host!
1) RSVP “Yes” for those events you may attend. This puts an item out in the feeds for more visibility.
2) Write on the Wall – whether your RSVP is a Yes, No or Maybe. You can easily write on the wall of Events “en masse” via the small text box on your requests page where you RSVP. Whatever you write in there is automatically transferred to the Event wall.
3) Upload Photo(s) to the Event page. This goes out in the feeds.
4) Upload Video(s) to the Event page. This goes out in the feeds.
5) Post relevant links using Links to the Event page. This goes out in the feeds. (As an attendee, be careful not to post a link to something that might conflict with the host’s agenda).
6) Click on “Invite People to Come” and invite your friends.
7) Click the Share button and Post to your Profile with a message. This goes out into the News Feed of all your friends.
8) Click the Share button and send to specific friend(s) or a List(s). (Use with discretion). For example, you might see an event that certain friends would find particularly appealing and can invite them privately via Facebook email.
9) Click the Like link and/or add a Comment on any Photo, Video or Link.
10) Send out tweets on Twitter with the link to the Facebook event. Create a shortened link first with a free link-tracking service like http://bit.ly
As an Event organizer, be mindful of not emailing your invitees too often. I like to precede all email communication with something like this: [You are receiving this message as an invitee of xyz event. To no longer receive such emails, please go to the Event page and RSVP “Not attending.”]
